Change is a constant! That seems very true in the current copier industry. Independent dealers are being bought by the larger manufacturer. This is starting to cause a problem for the customer. Are they still dealing with an authorized dealer who can provide them with the correct support for their copiers?
An authorized dealer has all the support needed from the manufacturer to give the customer good service. They are able to buy the parts that are necessary to fix the machine if it is having a problem. The company technicians are able to go through constant training on the latest technology with the current machines. An authorized dealer is provided with full support from the manufacturer. If a machine is having problems and the certified technicians from the independent dealer cannot fix the problem a technician from the manufacturer will fly into the client’s location and fix the machine.
As a customer what type of service would you like? After you make an investment into a copier you are not going to want to turn around and spend more money because your dealer cannot fix your machine. An authorized dealer can help protect the consumer when they make a purchase. Make sure you ask your dealer if they are authorized for the machine that they are selling you.
Very interesting article whom you post.

Copier company and manufacturer merger mania is dealing a blow to many customers. This past month alone 7 companies became new customers because of the copier scanner manufacturer buying out their dealers and not honoring their maintenance agreements. Some independent dealers provide better service, quality of work and cost savings than the factory authorized copier dealer.

This is only a truth partially... dealers have mostly better knowledge about machines in field, their problems and solutions for this problems, than manufacturer represantatives.
Copier companies always says... "nobody had reported such problems, we cannot help you... we don't know... there is no support... we will not give you a warranty for exploatation materials..." and so on.
We have some kind of machines for 2 years in the field and a big problems with developing units, which should lasts for whole copier life (600.000 copies) but lasts for only 5.000-15.000 copies. We have reported problems so many times, that manufacturer said to us - "this is only exploatation material, so we can give you a warranty for only 2 weeks in the field or 5.000 copies".
Big deal... tell to the customer that he has to buy a new developing unit for 1/4 of the price of new machine...

Wow, this article is just not that accurate at all. First, I have been on all sides for many years and still service office equipment. You have to understand that there are NO constant truths. Some times the guy selling/servicing copiers out of his garage is the best guy in town and the billion dollar manufacturer is the worst.
Understand this:
1. Many factory trained technicians go out on their own and are highly qualified to sell/service copiers.
2. Independents who aren't authorized dealers can still get supplies/parts as their are many distributors out there.
3. It really doesn't matter who you buy from in the sense that parts must be available for 10 years I believe (federal law).
4. Every, and I do mean EVERY manufacturer has had really good machines and really big POS machines over the years. A manufacturer selling direct or an authorized dealer may be inclined to sell whatever is left. The independent guy in his garage should know the good ones built like tanks compared to japanese/chinese plastic crap. In other words he can get the more reliable machines. After all, if he has to pay for parts and service them, he's going to want the most reliable and service friendly/free machines out there.
Issues with the article:
Article: "After you make an investment into a copier you are not going to want to turn around and spend more money because your dealer cannot fix your machine."
Response: Let's be more specific here and quit generalizing. Typically you can either lease or buy the machine. If you buy the machine then after so many copies and/or time has elapsed then you will pay for all parts and an hourly rate for service. If you have a maintenance agreement (can be had on both buying/leasing), such as a cost per copy (cpc), then who cares, the dealer will have to pay for the parts and get it working.
Article: "An authorized dealer can help protect the consumer when they make a purchase."
Response: Really??? Are you serious? Wow! Just how grounded are you? And Real Estate Agents have their clients' best interests in mind...mhmmm. ANYONE selling ANYTHING is in the business to make money. They are not your allies, your friends, or going to give you something for nothing. They are in existence to sell and make a profit.
Article: "An authorized dealer has all the support needed from the manufacturer to give the customer good service."
Response: Again, this is a hasty generalization. All manufacturers are different and can be very different from region to region. Some have wonderful programs to train and back up their dealer network and some are completely horrible.
